The Flag (Silver) edition of 1,000 prints was released as part of Banksy’s London Santa’s Ghetto exhibition in December 2006. A Flag (Gold) version was released in 2007, in a much smaller size edition of 112 signed prints.
Flag shows a group of children and young adults standing victoriously atop a burned-out car raising the American flag. The protagonists are portrayed as disenfranchised urban youths. With only one touch of colour, represented by a large gold or silver (according to the edition) sun or moon, the scene bears a melancholic and mournful tone. Banksy’s work is a reference to the iconic photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by American photographer Joe Rosenthal, taken on 23 February 1945. The photo depicts six US Marines lifting the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Banksy is an anonymous British street artist, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges throughout the world. Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack.
Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public 'installations' are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on.
